How to Remove Bounced Emails

The best way to remove bounced emails is to first identify the specific reason they bounced. There are a number of reasons your email could have bounced back – some more serious than others, so it’s important to understand the different categories so that you can take action accordingly.

SMTP – The recipient’s server was temporarily unavailable or overloaded. This isn’t as bad as a hard bounce, but it’s still an indication that you won’t be able to contact them any time soon.

CONTENT – Something in the body or subject of your email was a red flag for the recipient’s spam filter. This can sometimes be a sign that the email address is no longer valid or that the person has become disinterested in your brand.

DELIVERY_FAILED – The email could not be delivered because the local or domain part of the address was incorrect. This can be due to a typo, a non-existent email address or because the person no longer works at the company that you’re emailing.

Once you’ve identified why they bounced, you can then start cleaning up your list by exporting all of the contacts in your Bounces and Unsubscribes Tools tab and then deleting the ones that fit into one of the categories above. It’s always a good idea to keep your list fresh, especially since it helps you avoid spam complaints and limits the amount of time that your ESP has to limit your sender score.
